4th DeZooFa: Competition for the most innovative product

64 pet products entered for the Innovation Competition organized by the German Pet Trade & Industry Association (ZZF) and WZF to promote animal protection / Trend to health and nature

29. May 2007

Wiesbaden - “Health and nature” were the trends at this year’s competition for exhibitors of innovations to promote animal protection at the 4th German Pet Trade Fair DeZooFa, which took place in Wiesbaden from 4-6 May 2007. 37 companies presented a total of 64 innovative pet products in eight product groups, from which the exhibition visitors could choose one promising and species-appropriate product in each product group. “The pet supplies industry has shown lots of creativity again this year in the development of new products to suit the needs of animals and humans,” says Klaus Oechsner, President of the German Pet Trade & Industry Association (ZZF), commenting on the new products entered by the DeZooFa exhibitors.

The first place in the "aquaria" product group went to "Dimmlux" from Wolfram Haupt Aquarien- und Ladenbau GmbH. According to the manufacturer’s information, Dimmlux creates natural light conditions in the aquarium with the aid of up to four independent lights that simulate effects such as sunrise, bad weather, clouds or moon phases. The Dimmlux fluorescent tubes can be brightened or dimmed by an infinitely variable control to provide flicker-free light from zero to 100 per cent of the luminous power.

In the “terraria” product group, most visitors voted for the “Lucky Reptile Bright Sun UV Radiator” from Import Export Peter Hoch. The manufacturer says many reptiles need light-intensive UV radiation. Especially diurnal reptiles are exposed to light values of over 100,000 lux in nature, but terrariums have previously seldom reached values above 10,000 lux. The various versions of the new UV radiator now makes values of up to 100,000 lux possible at a separation of 30 centimetre. The animals also receive vital UV and heat radiation.

The Austrian company Sacherer achieved first place in the “dogs” segment with “Fred Freeze”. The company claims it has succeeded in developing a very efficient and environment-friendly spray for freezing dogs’ excrement. Spraying the excrement and the quick cooling process removes the unpleasant smell and makes it feel hard and cold like a stone. This makes it easier for the dog owner to remove the excrement.

The company Carnello beat its competitors in the “dog food” product group with its “dog’s chewing gum”. According to the manufacturer’s information, the chewing gum consists of 90 per cent gelatine (collagen), which is filled with fine chicken liver and contains only 2.1 per cent fat. Gelatine improves the resilience of cartilage and tendons and also has a positive effect on the dog’s skin and fur. Chewing cleans the gums and teeth and strengthens the chewing muscles.

The most votes in the “cats” segment went to Hunter GmbH for its cat toy “Mouse on Wheels”, which offers the cat interactive playing fun. A built-in wind-up mechanism makes it easy to start the game by pulling back the mouse, which encourages the cat to hunt the mouse. The integrated catmint makes the cat even more playful.

The first place in the “small mammals” segment went to the manufacturer Bunny Tierernährung GmbH for its “Entero Vital Paste”. According to the manufacturer, this food supplement supports bowel activity for rabbits and rodents. Its natural immune globulins (antibodies) and vitamin A-D-E complex improves the power of resistance to avoid disorders of the digestive tract due to transport stress, change of food or other causes.

For the first time there were two winners in the “birds” segment due to the same number of votes for both products: “Canina Heilmoortränke” from Canina Pharma GmbH and “Hugro Aktiv-Streu” from Hugro. The Heilmoortränke V for birds comprises natural moor and moor extract with a large share of biological ingredients like humic acids, fulvo acids, minerals and trace elements and improves resistance. The product is especially suitable for preventing diarrhoea and nervous gastric disorders due to change of food, transport stress or after administering antibiotics. The Aktiv-Streu litter from Hugro consists of hemp litter pellets, which are obtained from the stem pith of the hemp plant. The pellets are made without grinding, so that they retain a large absorption capacity and need not be replaced as often as conventional litter. Another advantage is that the litter does not crumble into mealy dust and does not fly out of the cage so easily.

The first place in the “equestrian sports” product group went to the food supplement “cdVet Toxi-sorb plus” from cdVet Naturprodukte GmbH. According to the manufacturer, the product consists of herbs, yeasts, natural mineral complexes and special root extracts. It contains vital substances, beer yeast, herbs and a special yeast which is capable of binding germs and toxic substances to make them harmless. It also controls bowel activity and strengthens resistance.

ZZF and the DeZooFa promoter, Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft Zoologischer Fachbetriebe GmbH (WZF), first launched the competition to support animal protection six years ago with the aim of promoting the production and sale of particularly species-appropriate pet articles.
